Memusi should go easy on hubris

Still, Memusi provided his listeners with some comic relief when claimed that the three Nasa affiliated MCAs (my MCAs) in Kajiado Central were elected because of him. If we go by that logic, who will take credit for Kajiado East, which does not have a single Jubilee MCA?

Kajiado Central MP Kanchori Memusi has an exaggerated sense of importance. How else does one describe a man who stands on a podium and purports to lecture his party leader against fielding candidates against him in the party primaries.

He reminds one of Icarus, in the Greek mythology, a young man who after acquiring shiny new wings made of wax, felt he could fly anywhere and damn anyone who tried to warn him of consequences. Thus Icarus, filled with hubris, decided to put his wings to a test and fly to the sun.

When he got too close to the sun, the heat started melting his wax and soon he fell to the ground. His ill-fated wings disintegrated in the face of unprecedented heat from the sun.

Memusi might find himself suffering similar fate, if not worse, if he does not check his youthful exuberance. How does one call himself a democratic leader yet he proceeds, without batting an eyelid, to demand that she should not be subjected to a nomination contest?

It should be remembered that this is not the first time the Kajiado Central MP is issuing ultimatums to Raila Odinga.

Granted he might have had a point he wanted to put across, it came out rather awkwardly. We shall attempt to give him the benefit of the doubt, nonetheless. In his ill-advised rant, Memusi expressed fears that some strangers might force themselves into the ODM party and who might be given preferential treatment.

He was specifically referring to Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku, who has lately been gravitating towards the ODM inspired Azimio la Umoja. That is a fair point, but is it worth all the theatrics he treated his listeners to?

If indeed Memusi has evidence of some dirty behind-the-scenes schemes, he should have exposed that instead of engaging in histrionics. Instead of embarrassing his party leader in a village meeting, he should book an appointment with Raila Odinga and pour his heart out. We are quite certain the party leader will hear him out.

Better still, the Kajiado Central MP should square it out with Nemama Innocent, the Kajiado County ODM chair. It is Nemama who has been championing Leku’s case in ODM. Memusi shouldn’t confuse Baba with Nemama.

During the Azimio la Umoja launch at the Kasarani Stadium on December 10, Odinga announced that the Azimio la Umoja initiative is open to membership from other members, an offer that Governor Lenku has enthusiastically taken up. Thus when Memusi claims that him and ‘his MCAs’ should not be subjected to nomination, he is basically rubbishing the whole idea of Azimio la Umoja.

As long as Azimio la Umoja proves to be an attractive option in Kajiado, Memusi and ‘his MCAs’ will have to reckon with lots of challengers who also want a piece of the action. If he is confident of his popularity on the ground, he has nothing to worry about. Isn’t it ironical that for man who believes so much in his ability, Memusi should be so afraid of a political contest.

Still, Memusi provided his listeners with some comic relief when claimed that the three Nasa affiliated MCAs (my MCAs) in Kajiado Central were elected because of him. If we go by that logic, who will take credit for Kajiado East, which does not have a single Jubilee MCA?

What he should be advocating for is a free and fair nomination contest within the party, otherwise hizo zingine ni vipindi.
