Teenage girl arrested over abortion

Infant survived and was taken to Loitokitok Sub-County Hospital

Police from Kajiado South SubCounty are holding a teenage girl who allegedly procured an abortion and discarded the baby into a pit latrine while alive.

The incident, which has happened at Kimana trading centre on January 3, attracted a huge crowd who were helping the police retrieve the remains of the preterm baby.

The infant was taken to Loitokitok SubCounty Hospital and placed in an incubator.

We heard the cries of a baby inside the toilets and got concerned.  When we looked inside, we saw a young baby wrapped in a paper bag. We raised the alarm and other neighbours came and helped us remove the young, said a resident.

With the help of the Loitokitok fire extuinguisher track ladder, young men got inside the 15foot pit and picked up the baby.

Women from the area admonished the teenage girl, saying she would rather have given birth then give the child to a childless couple. They called for deterrent action to be taken against the perpetrator as an example to other young women who may be tempted into doing similar actions.
