Over 100 elderly people living in Kikelelwa area of Loitokitok Sub-County celebrated their Jamhuri day in style after they were served with special lunch and foodstuffs from youth in Kajiado South Sub-County.

The joyful elders were entertained at Kikelelwa Pentecostal Church grounds through youthful play such as carrying an egg with a spoon, running, and also inserting a string in a needle, with winners getting cash awards in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The entertaining event, which was organized by youth from Kikelelwa Maashujaa Group, fed the elderly and also gave them foodstuff and blankets for the cold season.

According to one of the youth who organize the event, which was dubbed “mashujaa mtaani, the elderly participated in different sporting activities and were awarded with some cash, while they narrated to the younger generations how things were during their youthful stages.

We are very happy to host this event and to see our elderly grandparents trying to run while carrying an egg with a spoon, and also seeing them competing for an eyesighttesting event of putting a string into needle. It really motivates the youth and is a way of bringing them together since most of them no longer walk a distance or meet often,” said Daniel Nkamalo, the youth leader in Kikelelwa.

The grandparents were happy to meet their old friends and also share a meal together, while also having something to carry while going home.

The elderly challenged the youth in the city to start such initiatives which will help their old parents in rural settlements to be remembered often and not only during the festive season.
